Obituary for Robert Dale Crim

Robert Dale Crim, 91, of Bridgeport, passed away Thursday morning, June 26, 2014, in the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center. He was born in Bridgeport on September 11, 1922, a son of the late Arthur and Nancy May Sutton Crim.
His first wife of 28 years, Violet Lorraine Tharp Crim, preceded him in death in July 1995. He is survived by his companion, Cecil Claire Jenkins.
Also surviving are two daughters, Robin Lee Schetzel and her husband Douglas, Simpsonville, KY; their three children, Stacey Dale Brewer and her husband Thomas, Taylor Lee Snyders and her husband Andy, and Douglas Keith, II and his wife Tara; and Julie K. O’Donnell and her husband Lt. Col. David O’Donnell, Fairfax Station, VA; and their daughter, Erin Elizabeth; great grandchildren, Colton W. Brewer and Ethan A. Snyders.
He is survived by Cecil’s son, Clinton Jenkins; and several nieces and nephews, Nancy Bevers Fessell, Paulding, OH; Shirley Hall Masto, Clarksburg; and Jo Ann Herring, Columbus, OH; Karen Tharp Jackson, Williamstown; Douglas Bevers, OH; Donald Hall, West Union; Gary Hall, Bridgeport; J. Sutton, Columbus, OH; and Terry Tharp, Clarksburg.
In addition to his first wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a stepson, (Henry Gabbert III (son of Lorraine) in 1989; two sisters, Georgia Sutton Bevers and Ruth Sutton Hall; and two brothers, Peter J. and Jake Sutton; and niece Peggy Elders and nephew John Robert Hall.
Dale was a US Army veteran of World War II and served from December 1942 until he was honorably discharged as a Corporal on November 9, 1945. During his tour of active duty, he was stationed in Africa, Belgium, England, France, and Germany. In the invasion of Normandy Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944, he was wounded and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He also received five Battle Stars. Dale was also recognized recently for his service to our Country and had recently been interviewed by WDTV regarding his service and his recent visit to Normandy on the 50th Anniversary of the invasion. He was truly a member of the greatest generation.
Returning from his service in World War II, he established and owned a successful business venture, Crim’s Exxon, Crim’s Studebaker and Crim Motors for 34 years in Clarksburg and Bridgeport. During his career, it has been noted that he employed many young people to work summer months, weekends and evenings. The lives that he touched during those years were many and they have gone on to be successful in their own professions. Many times over the years, these people would thank him for inspiring them to work hard.
Dale was a personable, congenial and an inspiration to relatives and friends. To each, there was always a pleasant greeting and a complimentary message from him. Strangers he would meet received the same courtesy.
He was a member of Smith Chapel United Methodist Church, Meadowbrook Road; a charter member of the World War II Memorial Society; Member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart; VFW Post 573.
Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Saturday, June 28, 2014 from 6-8 pm and again on Sunday from 12-3 and 6-8 pm, where services will be held on Monday, June 30, 2014, at 11 a.m. with Reverend Thomas Horne presiding. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery, where Military Funeral Honors will be accorded by the Lewis County Honor Guard and the WV Army National Guard Honor Guard, Camp Dawson, WV.
