Obituary for Pastor Robert G. Jennings

Pastor Robert George Jennings, 87, of Bridgeport, passed away Friday afternoon, July 11, 2014, in the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center. He was born on June 4, 1927, in New Milford, PA, a son of the late Ward H. and Margaret (Whitney) Jennings.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Betty Haynes Jennings, whom he married August 6, 1950.
Also surviving are three daughters, Deborah J. Lee and her husband Greg, Auburn, Alabama; Holly J. St. John and her husband Terry, Chatham, VA; and Melody J. Thomas and her husband Isaac, Bridgeport; 12 grandchildren, Nichole Schmidt; Joshua Lee; Natashia Priestley; Justin St. John; Brittany Shreve; Heather Rager; Jordan St. John; Tara Harper; Tiffany Thomas; Isaac Thomas III; Titus Thomas; and Jared St. John; and 12 great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Raymond Jennings and his wife Betty, Halstead, PA; and Herman “Mike” Jennings, Scranton, PA; and several nieces and nephews complete his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dwight Jennings.
Bob was a veteran of the US Navy, serving in World War II. He had attended Moody Bible Institute, the Greensburg Bible Institute; and Baptist Bible Seminary. Starting his ministry in Pennsylvania and Maryland, he also served 14 years between the First Baptist Church in Nutter Fort, and Freedom Baptist Church, and he retired after 17 years of service at Calvary Baptist Church in Chapmanville. After 53 years of serving in the ministry, he and Betty then retired to Sarasota, FL, and are members of the First Sarasota Baptist Church, before returning to Bridgeport two years ago.
Bob was an avid reader and loved to study the Word. He enjoyed gardening and fishing.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Monday from 4 – 8 p.m. Pastor Jennings will lie in state at Grace Baptist Church, Oral Lake Road, Bridgeport, on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, from 10 – 11 a.m., where services will be held at 11 a.m. with Pastor Terry C. St. John and Pastor R. Gregory Lee presiding. Interment will follow in WV National Cemetery, where Military Funeral Honors will be provided.
