Obituary for Elma Loraine ""Toogie"" Underwood (Cochran)

Elma Loraine “Toogie” Underwood of Bridgeport, passed away Saturday afternoon, December 27, 2014, at her residence. She was born in Flemington on September 25, 1930, a daughter of the late Aaron Ray Cochran and Lexie Beatrice Swisher Cochran.

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 57 years, George R. ”Bob” Underwood, on March 23, 2007.

She is survived by two sons, James Robert Underwood and his wife Sonja Sheppard of Fair Oaks, CA and Michael Ray Underwood and his wife Dawn of Townville, SC; three grandchildren, Jennifer Underwood, Sally Underwood, and Jason Underwood; one step-grandchild, Kyle Nowlin; two step-great-grandchildren, Kyle Nowlin, Jr and Kearsten Nowlin; and a sister, Evelyn Yvonne (Bonnie) Booth; a sister-in-law, June Cochran; and several nieces and nephews and their children.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Edwin R. Cochran; and three sisters, Edith Goff, Mary Bennett, Margaret Conrad and her sister in law Dorothy Underwood.

Toogie was an amazing and very patient mother, wife and friend. She was a devoted grandmother and affectionately referred to her grandchildren as “her kids”. She had many opportunities to move but she was not inclined to leave her home in the country or her beloved home state of West Virginia. Her strong desire was to stay in her home. We are grateful she was able to do that.

For many years she brought smiles to the faces of shoppers at the C&H market and Ace Hardware in Bridgeport. And, for many years, the people brought a smile to her face as well. It was a great relationship.

When her time on earth was at an end, and the time came to journey on to a better place to be, it is fair and accurate to say that Toogie Underwood lived a meaningful life that mattered. Her inner strength will be remembered well by us.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport on Friday from 4 – 8 p.m., where services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2015, with Reverend Etheldean Yanero presiding. Interment will follow in Middleville Baptist Church Cemetery.
