Obituary for Ted H. Rollins

Ted H. Rollins, 89, former CSX official and member of the West Virignia House of Delegates, died Saturday, February 7 at Maplewood in Bridgeport. He was born August 12, 1925 at Zesing, Harrison County, son of the late Floda Ritter Rollins and Oliver M. Rollins.

Mr. Rollins is survived by his wife of 67 years, Julia Steuart Rollins. He is also survived by Jeffrey (Phyllis Marton) of Katonah, N.Y., and Jeff's children Karin, Michael, and Jonathan Marton-Rollins; daughter Cheryl Cohen Hylton (C. D. "Tony" Hylton III), of Morgantown and Cheryl's daughter Maris Cohen; Beverly Sheingorn VanDerhei (Jack) of Boyds, Maryland; and Kimberly Rollins Dittman of Stonewood. He also leaves behind his beloved cat, Calico.

Other survivors include brother Mack Rollins of Pensacola, FL and sister Frankie Durr of Crystal River, FL.

He was preceded in death by brother Jack Rollins, a son, Bradley Lynn Rollins, and three sons-in-law, Mark Cohen, Larry Sheingorn and Ronald Dittman.

Mr. Rollins was a 1943 graduate of Bristol High School, Harrison County, WV. A World War II veteran, he served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Navy. After discharge he returned to Clarksburg and went to work with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad as a telegraph operator. After being promoted to several positions, Mr. Rollins retired as Superintendent of Operations of the Monogah Division (CSX) in Grafton, WV. During his railroad career he held positions in Grafton, Fairmont, Gassaway, Cowen and Cumberland, MD.

Mr. Rollins attended Alderson-Broaddus College (now University). In the late 1950s, he served as Chairman of the Taylor County Democratic Party. In 1960, Mr. Rollins was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates representing Taylor County. He had been a member of the Masons for over 60 years and was also a Shriner.

Mr. and Mrs. Rollins became avid square dancers in 1974 and enjoyed that activity for 25 years, attending square dancing conventions across the country. After a 36-year railroad career, in 1981 Mr. Rollins retired and the couple moved to Bradenton, FL. In retirement the Rollins' traveled extensively enjoying trips to Europe (England, Scotland, France, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Austria), Hawaii, Israel, Alaska, Egypt, Panama Canal and the Caribbean. In addition, Mr. Rollins served 8 years as a school crossing guard in Bradenton. In 2003, the Rollins' returned to West Virginia (Bridgeport) to be near family.

The family invites friends and family to join them for coffee from 10:15-11a.m. on Friday, February 20, 2015, in the multi-purpose room at Maplewood, Bridgeport, where an informal memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. A graveside service will be held at WV National Cemetery immediately following at 12:30p.m.
