Jerome Allan "Jumbo"  Reed Sr.
Jerome Allan “Jumbo” Reed, Sr., 89, of Hall Street, Bridgeport, passed away Wednesday morning, February 11, 2015, in the WV Veterans Nursing Facility. He was born on March 24, 1925, in Ocean Mines, a son of the late Allan Reed and Heaster (Morrison) Dunn Reed.

On February 13, 1947, he married Ruth Loretta Preston, who preceded him in death on March 29, 2009.

He is survived by nine children, Jerome A. Reed, Jr. and his wife Adamae, Fayetteville, NC; Marguerite L. Sprouse, Clarksburg; Shirley Diane Whitehair and her husband Delmous, Buck Run; John Thomas Reed and his wife Trella, Corbin Branch; Glenda Mae Rabenold and her husband Kevin, Bridgeport; Stephen Reed, Sr., and his wife Barbara, Bridgeport; Robert A. Reed, Fairmont; William R. Reed and his wife Marina, Corbin Branch; and Kenneth E. Reed and his wife Barbara, Bridgeport; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by his brothers, Robert, Thomas and Bill Dunn; and his sisters Nancy Kathren Dunn DeMoss, Virginia Dunn Caputo, and Alma Reed Conrad.

Jumbo served in the US Navy during World War II. He was a truck driver for Helms Express and Ryder P.I.E., retiring in 1987 after 30 years of service. He was a former member of the Bridgeport Fire Department, serving as Fire Chief from 1957 – 1966. He had attended Evangel Baptist Church and Bridgeport Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Saturday evening from 6-8 pm and on Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Monday, February 16, 2015, at 11 a.m. with Reverend Thomas P. Horne presiding. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery, where Military Funeral Honors will be accorded.
