Obituary for John F. Stickel

John F.  Stickel
John F. Stickel, 84, of Clarksburg passed away on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at his residence. He was born May 7, 1930 in New Milton in Doddridge County, a son of the late Herman S. Stickel, Sr. and Mamie L. Stickel.
He is survived by his loving wife Linda S. Tyler Stickel. Linda was not only his loving wife but his best friend.
He is also survived by one sister, Virginia L. Nicholson of West Union; one brother, Wilbur Neil Stickel and his wife Cretta of Bridgeport; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews along with one special niece, Vickie Trippett.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Herman S. Stickel, II.
He grew up in Doddridge County and attended a one room school during the first through eighth grades and went on to attend Doddridge County High School, where he graduated.
John was a Veteran of the Korean War serving in the Air Force right after High School and served honorably until November 2, 1955. After the Korean War he went on to attend Potomac State College and received an associate degree in Chemical Engineering. He was also a brother in Sigma Phi Nu.
After attending Potomac State he enrolled in Fairmont State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a minor in Social Studies.
John then entered the workforce as a Court Investigator and Probation officer for Judges in Harrison and Doddridge Counties during his 28 year tenure; he worked for 11 different judges.
During the 1970’s he taught criminal justice classes at Fairmont State University.
He was an avid sportsman, and he enjoyed hunting deer and turkey. He traveled to Quebec, Canada for 19 years to fish for Walleye and Northern Pike and he enjoyed fishing with the people that traveled with him.
John never met a stranger or failed to help a friend or neighbor if he could help make their life better. He was a jokester and liked to make people laugh, the old saying if you make people laugh they were happy. John will be sadly missed by friends and people who knew him as a true friend a neighbor. John said many times, that out of all his world travels and accomplishments his great joy was when he was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on July 20, 1980.

Family and friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport on Sunday, February 22, 2015 from 2-8 pm. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday at 11:00 with Robert Siders presiding. Entombment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Quiet Dell.
