Obituary for Dr. Lydia Lazaro

Dr. Lydia Lazaro, 89, of Lexington, SC, and formerly of Bridgeport, passed away Saturday, April 4, 2015, at Lexington Medical Center. She was born on November 18, 1925 in Naga City, Philippines, to the late Eligio and Dionisia Corporal Legaspi.

On April 21, 1951, she married Dr. Jaime E. Lazaro, who preceded her in death on April 2, 1999.

Dr. Lazaro is survived by four sons and their spouses: Jaime Lazaro, Jr. (Mary), Jessie Lazaro (Ginger) and Joe Lazaro (Sallie) all of Huntington, WV, Dr. John Michael Lazaro (Andrea) of Lexington, SC.; three daughters: Leila Ruedy (Tommy) of Raleigh, NC, Liza Matz (Mike) of Centreville, VA, and Leigh Warf (Mike) of Lexington, SC. She also leaves behind her beloved dog, Honey. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren: Jimmy Lazaro, Andrea Ruedy Trimble, Matt Ruedy, Sara Ruedy Quigley, Jennifer Lazaro, Justin Lazaro, Jackie Lazaro, Amanda Lazaro, Christopher Matz, Katie Matz, Gracie Matz, Jonathan Warf and Kelsey Warf. Four great grandchildren: Scarlett Lazaro, Eleanor and Charlotte Trimble and one great-granddaughter due this week.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a grandchild, Jessica Lazaro; a sister and a brother.

Dr. Lazaro graduated with a medical degree from Manila Central University in 1953. She came to the US in 1958 and completed her psychiatric residency in New York. She practiced psychiatry in West Virginia until her retirement in 1973. She was Clinical Director at both Weston State Hospital and Huntington State Hospital. She was an active member of All Saints Catholic Church, the Women’s Club of Clarksburg and Bridgeport, Harrison County Society Alliance, and West Virginia Medical Association Auxiliary before moving to South Carolina. Dr. Lazaro was an avid WVU Mountaineer sports fan.

A special thank you to the doctors, nursing staff, respiratory therapists and caregivers of Lexington Medical Center, West Columbia, SC for the excellent care they provided to her.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Thursday, April 9, 2015, from 5:00 -8:00 pm with a Vigil Service at 7:30 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at All Saints Catholic Church on Friday, April 10, 2015 at 10:00 am, with Father Patsy Wash as Celebrant. Entombment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
