Obituary for Sherry L. Ash

Sherry L. Ash, 71, of Guntersville, Alabama and long-time resident of Bridgeport, West Virginia, passed away after a brief battle with cancer at the Valley View Health and Rehab Center on Saturday, April 30, 2016.

She was born July 6, 1944, in Oakridge, TN to the late Harold Phillips and Reva Leake. After working the farm for 14 years, she escaped to a new life with her late sister Margaret and husband Grady. Later she moved to Orlando, FL where she finished her teen years with her older brother Elbert Phillips and his beloved bride Jean. There, in 1961, she met her future husband the late Gary E. Ash. They were married Nov. 22, 1961, and he passed away March 21, 2001.

As wife to Gary for the next 39 years, the U.S. Air Force directed the many moves around the country as they also raised their sons during his 20 year career. Survived are her three sons; Gary L. Ash and wife Marina of Vacaville, CA, Alan K. Ash of Dunbar, WV, and Walter L. Ash of Worthington, WV. Sherry also had two grandsons; Kevin Ash of Cabot, AR, and Alex Ash of Worthington, WV, and one step-grandson Artem Kalashnikov of Vacaville, CA.

Surviving siblings include her sister Delores Haga and brother Ray Phillips, preceded in death is her brother Jerry Phillips. She was also the half-sister to her late dad’s older children previously mentioned and is survived by her half-brother David Phillips.

Sherry was a devoted Christian, long-time homemaker, loving wife, mother, and at one time, one of the nation’s top selling Avon Representatives. She was honored in New York City and featured in an Avon sales motivation video. A friend to many, she is affectionately remembered by her Church family as the “hugger.” As a member of the Grace Baptist Church, she was in the choir, a dedicated prayer warrior, and took care of the cards to inspire others.

Friends and family will be received from 6-8 pm Friday at the Burnside Funeral Home, 607 South Virginia Ave. Bridgeport, WV. The funeral will be held at 11 am Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Don Knotts officiating in the stead of Pastor Jeff Vaughn.
