Anna (Cornelick) Phillips, 92, of Chester, WV, passed away Thursday afternoon, January 5, 2017, in East Liverpool Hospital, East Liverpool, Ohio. She was born June 29, 1924, in Uniontown, PA, a daughter of the late Ignatz Walter Karnelerski and Anna (Soliva) Karnelerski.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Harold “Bill” Phillips, Sr., on October 19, 1978.
She is survived by her children, Gilbert Harold Phillips, Jr. and his wife Anna, Jacksonville, FL; Martha Ann Hayhurst, Nutter Fort; Carol Sue McElwayne and her husband Walt, Clarksburg; Rebecca Lou Macheca and her husband Dick, Chester; Gregory Lee Phillips, Sr. and his wife Jan, Clarksburg; and William “Bill” Gene Phillips, Sr. and his wife Jowetta, Holdenville, OK; 25 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Nicholas Harold Macheca; four sisters, Mildred Shumiloff, Victoria Een, Mary Marteney, and Wanda Casper; and two brothers, William Casper and Stanley Cornelick.
Anna was known for her loving nature and good example. She was an avid reader, including reading the Bible every morning. She would end each day praying and loved to sing hymns. She enjoyed crocheting and quilting. Her church, Avondale Baptist Church in East Liverpool, OH, was very important to her. She loved to cook, host and serve. Anna spent much of her life raising children. She began by caring for 2 of her siblings, Stash and Victoria, at an early age. In adulthood, she made a home for 6 children. After being widowed in 1978, she returned to school at West Virginia Business College and went on to be a caregiver for other children. Throughout the 90’s and into the 2000’s she cared for 4 of her grandchildren in California and later Washington, DC. Once everyone graduated high school, she was excited to finally get to be a grandmother to so many great-grandchildren. She was loved by many, affectionately called Mom, Grandma, Nana, GG or friend.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Monday from 3 – 8 p.m., where services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, with Pastor Terry Weyand presiding. Interment will follow in Simpson Cemetery.
