Obituary for Arnett Ray Burnside

Arnett Ray Burnside
Arnett Ray Burnside, 83, of Bridgeport, passed away Wednesday evening, February 8, 2017, in Bridgeport. He was born October 14, 1933, in Clarksburg, the son of the late Harvey Arnett Burnside and Etta Mae Williams Burnside.
Arnett is survived by three children, Beth A. Nooralian of Fairfax, VA; Brenda K. Dalessandro and her husband Mark of Tucson, AZ; and Scott P. Burnside of Bridgeport; three grandchildren, Jared and Jacob Dalessandro and Skyler Nooralian; one sister Hylen Calcerano of Pleasantville, NJ; several nieces and nephews and his former wife Betsy Bowling.
In addition to his parents, Arnett was preceded in death by his son-in-law Massoud Nooralian; two sisters, Helen Burns and her husband Bernard; Carol Lloyd; and a brother-in-law John Calcerano.
Arnett was a graduate of Bristol High School, class of 1951. He served in the U.S. Army for two years. He was stationed at Fort Carson near Colorado Springs, CO, where he discovered a love for the Rocky Mountains and big game hunting.
Following his service in the Army, he worked briefly for Fairmont Box Co. and Hazel-Atlas Glass Co. before working as a bookkeeper for Hope Gas Co. for 10 years, retiring in 1970. For five years, after finishing his day at Hope Gas, Arnett would start his second job at the West End Krogers; weekends he spent working at his first stint at self-employment, Burnside Trailer Sales. Arnett sold travel trailers and mobile and modular homes from 1966 to 1980. He then changed careers, starting Lakeside Car Wash in Bridgeport in 1981 and Mountaineer Car Wash in Shinnston in 1985.
Acting on his business intuition of seeing a need and filling it, Arnett and his son established Burnside Funeral Home in Bridgeport in 1997. Arnett took great pride in his personal hands-on approach to the construction and operation of his businesses.
In addition to his generous nature and work ethic, Arnett was well-known for his love of the outdoors and hunting, especially big game trophy hunting. He was also known for his beekeeping interest, which he inherited from his father.
He greatly enjoyed hunting elk, caribou, mountain lion, bobcats, and Kodiak bear in several western states and Canada. He was the second person in West Virginia to achieve the Grand Slam of the four North American wild sheep--a Dall ram from the Northwest Territories, a Stone sheep from Yukon Territory, a Rocky Mountain bighorn from British Columbia, and a desert sheep from the Grand Canyon area of Arizona. In 1986 he traveled with his son to Spain where he hunted mouflon sheep, Spanish ibex, chamois, and red stag.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, New York 10018 or to a charity of your choice in memory of Arnett.
Family and friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport Sunday, February 12 from 1-8 p.m., where funeral services will be conducted Monday, February 13 at 11 a.m. with Reverend Etheldean Yanero presiding. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery.
