Obituary for Margaret Dell Blackwell (Pittman)

Margaret Dell Pittman Blackwell, 89, of Bridgeport, passed away Saturday evening, July 22, 2017, in United Hospital Center. She was born May 20, 1928, in Okemah, OK, a daughter of the late Thomas H. and Ruth E. (Whiteman) Pittman.

On July 26, 1947, she married William S. “Sam” Blackwell, who preceded her in death on January 12, 2003.

She is survived by her son, William T. “Cork” Blackwell and his wife Karen of Bridgeport and her daughter, Barbara Jo Blackwell of Alexandria, VA; a sister, Mary Ellen Mieras, Loxahatchee, FL; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Kelly L. “Ollie” Blackwell, and a sister Virginia Borsos.

She graduated from Shinnston High School, Class of 1944, at the age of 16. She then attended Potomac State where she received a teaching certificate, and taught at a one-room schoolhouse in Francis Mine. She and Sam were the owners of City Cleaners in Bridgport from 1951 to 1970, and owned and operated the Glass Barn in Bridgeport from 1961 until their retirement in 1988. She was a long-time member of Queen Ester Chapter 11, Order of Eastern Star, and Bridgeport Baptist Church.

She enjoyed sewing and knitting, watching WVU football and basketball, and listening to Bridgeport football games on the radio.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Margaret’s memory to the Bridgeport Baptist Church, 556 Worthington Drive, Bridgeport, WV 26330; or Harrison County Humane Society, PO Box 4397, Clarksburg, WV 26302.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home 607 S. Virginia Ave, Bridgeport from 3 – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, where services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 26, 2017, with Pastor Tom Edgell presiding. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery.
