Obituary for Rev. Roy "Sonny" Mick Jr.

Reverend Roy Royce Mick, Jr. “Sonny”, 66, of Romines Mills, passed away Saturday, March 17, 2018, at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center, following a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born January 12, 1952, in Clarksburg, the son of Roy Royce Mick, Sr. and Mary M. Gains Mick.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Paulette F. Lanum Mick. One daughter, Heidi Mick Leaseburge and husband David. Three grandchildren, Gavin, Isabella, and Bentley Leaseburge, who were the light of his life. One brother Jerry F. Mick and wife Diane of Virginia Beach. Three nieces, Jessica Comoglio and husband Chris, Annie Takacs and husband Chuck, and Elizabeth Kreisher and husband Adam all of Pennsylvania and 4 great-nieces and 3 great-nephews. He is also survived by his best friend of fifty years, Rickey Brown and his faithful companion, Jimbo.
He was proceeded in death by both parents and one great-niece, Emma Takacs.
Roy graduated from Washington Irving High School in 1970. He attended Chapman College in Orange County, California, where he received an Associate’s of Arts Degree in 1972. In 1999 he felt the call to ministry and attended West Virginia Wesleyan College where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 2003. He continued his education by studying at Duke University in the Divinity Program.
Roy served in the United States Navy for four years and was stationed in NAS Miramar, San Diego, California where he received the National Defense Service Medal and First Good Conduct Medal. He then transferred to the 459th Army Reserve, where he retired as a First Sergeant with sixteen years of service. While serving in the Army Reserves he received the following awards: Army Reserve Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Defense Superior Service Ribbon, Overseas Training Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Army N.C.O. Professional Development Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal Ribbon, and Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal Ribbon.
Roy was employed at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg, WV where he retired with thirty-two years. Upon his retirement he served as a United Methodist Pastor for ten years and a member of the Upshur County Parish House.
Roy was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life. He loved spending time with his family, especially with his three grandchildren and his friends. He was a faithful Christian and strong in his faith.
The family would like to thank the 6th Floor Hospice Nurses at the VA Hospital for their care and compassion shown to Roy and the family the last six weeks.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Monday from 2 – 4 & 6 – 8 p.m., where services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, with Reverend George Bramble presiding. Interment will follow in Monroe Chapel Cemetery, Romines Mills.
