Obituary for Sara Lucille "Sally" Gorby

Sara (Sally) Lucille Gorby, 94, of Bridgeport, passed away peacefully at her home with her son by her side on Friday evening, April 27, 2018. She was born August 3, 1923, in Shreveport, LA, a daughter of the late Robert and Nellie Steele Harner.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Darrell Gorby, on December 19, 2012.
She is survived by her son John N. Gorby of Bridgeport, her grandchildren William M. and his wife Christine, Brenna L. Keller and her husband Brandon, and Chad R. Gorby, and her great-grandchildren Will Jr., Jake, Aspen and Callen.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, William “Bill” G. Gorby, D.O. ; and two sisters, Eleanor Engle and Bonnie Smith.
Sally received her Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from Salem College. She taught the first grade for a year at Johnson Elementary; at Simpson Elementary from 1967 – 1980; and Pierpont Elementary from 1985 – 1992. She retired from teaching in 1986 after 21 years of service. She was a member of the Bridgeport Womens Club and won several blue ribbons for crocheting and needlepoint. She volunteered at UHC for many years and Meals on Wheels in Harrison County for 10 years. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star, Queen Ester Chapter 11. She was the organist for many years at Simpson Creek Baptist Church and director of the Junior Choir from 1961 – 1967. She also enjoyed playing the piano at home. In addition she also enjoyed tending her flowers, especially her marigolds, scarlet sage, red geraniums, and purple and mauve impatiens.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions in Sally’s memory to Samaritan’s Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.
Family and friends will be received at Simpson Creek Baptist Church, 231 W. Philadelphia Avenue, Bridgeport on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, from 10 – 11 a.m. where funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. C. Michael Hopkins presiding. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery, Bridgeport.
