Obituary for William R Dodd

William Richmond Dodd, 94, of Bridgeport, departed this life Friday morning, June 1, 2018, in the WV Veterans Nursing Facility surrounded by his family. He was born in Salem on October October 8, 1923, the second son of Rev. Clarence O. Dodd and Martha E. Richmond Dodd.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bertha Mae Lewis Dodd, in 1976. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann Bartlett Dodd, whom he married May 25, 1984.
Also surviving are his son, William Richard Dodd and his wife Kim of Horner, WV; a grandson, Seth Richard Dodd of Lake Charles, Louisiana; step-son Steven J. Schweinebraten of Clarksburg; 2 step- granddaughters, Lisa Darby, Weston; and Haley Biller of Sand Fork; sister, Mary D. Ling of Amhurst, Ohio; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers and their wives, Clebert O. Dodd and his wife Helen; Robert L. Dodd and his wives Rosemary and Betty; and Paul N. Dodd; and a brother-in-law, Warren J. Ling.
After graduating from Salem High School in 1941 he worked at Glen L. Martin Aircraft in Baltimore, MD, and then entered the US Army, serving in the 164th Infantry in the South Pacific with time in Baugainville, the Solomon Islands, the Philippines, and on to Japan as a SGT in 1945.
Bill worked for Hope Gas Company for 40 years as a foreman, geologist, gas broker and land man, retiring in 1985. Bill was a member of the Bridgeport Senior Citizens; Late Lodge No. 63, AF & AM, and was Master Mason of Lodge No. 138 Pineville, WV, in 1951.
He was a member of Simpson Creek Baptist Church having served as an usher, a deacon, and in the Chancel Choir. After retirement Bill and Shirley traveled extensively and enjoyed many winters in Sarasota, FL.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, aides, chaplain and activities personnel at the WV Veterans Nursing Facility, and also to Peoples Hospice for the kind and gracious care given to Bill and his family.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Monday from 6 – 8 p.m., where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2018, with Dr. C. Michael Hopkins presiding. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Masonic Cemetery.
