Joseph Lee Copley formerly of Bridgeport, WV, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, March 27, 2019. He was born on August 12, 1932 in Lewis County, WV, a son of the late Joseph E. Copley and Lora M. Martin.
Joe is survived by his daughter, Virginia Lee (Cecil) Harris of Chesapeake, VA, his son Lawrence Joseph (Jacqueline) Copley of Elkview, WV, four grandchildren Kelly Jo (Nicholas) Broyles, Joseph Craig (Jennifer) Copley, Katelyn Lee (Mark) Simmons, Craig Irvin (Sarah) Harris and four great grandchildren, Addyson Broyles, Owen Broyles, Emma Copley and Logan Copley. Joe is survived by his siblings Ken Copley, Ron Copley, and Ann Godfrey.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife Helen E. (Wood) Copley.
Joe served his country as a United States Marine from 1952 to 1955. While serving in the Korean War he was awarded a Purple Heart with Gold Star, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with two stars, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, and United Nations Service Medal.
He retired from Consolidated Natural Gas after 35 years of service.
Joe never met a stranger. In his later years, his conversation usually included his honorable service in the United States Marine Corp. Although the family is proud of Joe’s service to his country, we know that this is not what defined him as a person. Joe was a loving husband, son, son-in-law, brother-in-law, father, father-in-law, uncle and friend who was always willing to go the extra mile to help others. His tender and loving heart will sadly be missed by all who knew him, especially his family.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that you make a contribution to the WV Alzheimer’s Association or your local Hospice.
Family and friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, WV on Monday, April 1, 2019 from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm. with Reverend Mike Hopkins presiding. Interment will be in the West Virginia National Cemetery, Prunytown, WV with military honors.
