Obituary for Joann Edna Alasky

Joann Edna Aaberg Alasky, 92, passed away at Ocala Regional Medical Center, Ocala, FL on April 12, 2019. Before her passing she had resided in The Villages, FL since October of 2016.
She was born in Norfolk, NE on February 9, 1927 to John and Emma Aaberg. Joann graduated from Norfolk HS and later graduated from Lincoln General Hospital School of Nursing as an RN, where she served in the U.S Cadet Nurse Corp (the nation’s first integrated uniformed U.S. service corps), which fulfilled an urgent need for nurses during World War II from 1943 to 1948. The U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps motto, “THEY SAVED LIVES AT HOME, SO OTHERS COULD SAVE LIVES ABROAD”.

She was married on May 8, 1947 to her beloved husband Robert Earl Alasky of Farmington, WV for 69 years. They met at a USO dance in Lincoln, NE in late 1944 prior to his deployment to England, as a B17-Gunner (Master Sergeant) in the U.S Air Force. The couple resided in Clarksburg, WV until her husband’s death in September of 2016.

Joann was an outgoing, energetic, multi talented person with a tenacious personality. She created award-winning quilts, delved into crafts of all kind, loved dancing, karaoke, cards, reading, computer games, as well as being a dynamic Grandmother and pie maker.

Joann was preceded in death by her Mother, Emma Kluender Aaberg and father John Aaberg, Stanton, NE; sister Anne Lienemann, and her husband Marvin, Randolph NE; brother Keith Aaberg and his wife Darlene,
Stanton, NE; and half brother Henry Aaberg, Sturgis SD.

Joann is survived by her two daughters-- Carol Jean Alasky Wyant of The Villages, FL and Julianne Alasky Christafore of Montclair, VA. In addition to her daughters, she leaves behind a grandson, Lt. Colonel Robert Manuel Christafore (Marine Corps), his wife Heather and their children Michael (8) And Madeline (6) of Manassas, VA; Kristen Marie (Christafore) Haken, her husband Michael, and their twins Finlay and Emerson (31mos old) and Hudson (2mos) of Round Hill, VA; Cassidy Jean Christafore, her husband Cesar Rodriquez, and their sons Peyton (7) and Jaxson (18mos) of Lake Ridge, VA.

Joann will be returned to West Virginia where her viewing and services will be held at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 1766 Milford Street, Clarksburg, WV on Monday, April 22, 2019. Public viewing from 10:00 to 12:00 noon precedes the 12 o’clock service with Pastor Linda Muhly presiding. Interment will follow at the WV National Cemetery, Pruntytown, WV where she will lie in rest with her husband, Robert.
