Obituary for James D "Jim" Stuart

James D. “Jim” Stuart, 74, of Mount Clare, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at United Hospital Center in Bridgeport following an extended illness. He was born on April 10, 1945 in Clarksburg, a son of the late James Clinton and Blooma Maxine Stuart of Craigmoor.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara Ward Stuart, whom he married on May 6, 1972.

He is also survived by two children, Lea Ann Stuart Sanders of Cape Coral, FL and DJ Stuart of Washington, DC; two cousins, Ben Stewart and wife Carol and Tom Stewart and wife Sandra, both of Fairmont.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Ann Stuart-Robinson.

Jim was a 1963 graduate of Roosevelt-Wilson High School and received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from West Virginia University. He worked for Hinkle Brothers, Kennedy Mechanical Contractors, and ultimately retired from Corhart Refractories in Buckhannon after more than 30 years as a Senior Equipment Engineer.

Jim was a current member of the Harrison Rural Electrification Association Board of Directors where he served for 22 years. He held the offices of president, vice president and secretary/treasurer during his tenure. He also served as past national director for the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association representing West Virginia.

He was a member of the former Green Hill United Methodist Church and served as superintendent and on various charge-wide committees. He was a past-officer of the Harrison County PTA, a member of the Lions Club, and a life member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Jim was an avid auto racing fan. He particularly enjoyed the Indy Car series and traveled to the Indianapolis 500 race and qualifying time trials many times over the years. Following his retirement, he planned upwards of 40 motor coach bus trips to many locations. Those attending affectionately named their group "Jim's Travelers."

Jim became a quadriplegic after suffering a spinal cord injury in an automobile accident in 2016. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to his many caregivers, as they provided much love and excellent care to Jim, allowing him to remain in his home.

Over the years, Jim always made space in his heart and home for his many pets, especially his two cats, Mr. Stubbs and Miss Tipp. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Harrison County, PO Box 4397 Clarksburg, WV 26302.

Family and friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport on Sunday June 30, 2019 from 2-8 pm. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, July 1, 2019 at 11:00 am with Reverend George Bramble presiding. Interment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
