Obituary for Dr. James D. Weinstein

Dr. James D. Weinstein, 82, of Bridgeport, died Saturday, August 15, 2020. He was born on March 4, 1938, in Philadelphia, PA, a son of the late Benjamin and Elizabeth Weinstein.

Jim, as his friends knew him, learned to play all sorts of ball on the streets of West Philly. He was a 3-sport star in high school (basketball, baseball, and football) and later as a college student at Franklin & Marshall, where he was named to their All-Time Greatest Basketball Team.

He attended University of Pennsylvania Medical School and remained there to do his Neurosurgical Residency. He came to WV in 1982, practiced for 30 years at United Hospital Center and then went to Marshall University to practice and do research in Brain Cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease.

Dr. Weinstein was a man of many talents and interests. He was the inventor of the early water bed, and the “Pertrach”, an emergency tracheostomy device to be used in the field. He was granted patents on a retractable scalpel and a fluid-like seat cushion. He loved exotic cars and owned and operated WV Classic Cars, a restoration business and museum. One of his creations was the WV Wolf, a roadster body of his own design on the chassis of a Porsche 928. This car was featured in Autoweek Magazine.

As a father he was involved in his son’s baseball activities, and he coached Little League and Babe Ruth. With fellow sports’ enthusiasts he purchased and then designed and built a baseball field in Rosemont Park in Taylor County.

Dr. Weinstein was also an artist, and his oil portraits and landscapes can be found in the homes of friends and businesses. He self-published two books, a novel and memoir, and his name can be found on many scientific papers.

Dr. Weinstein was well-liked and dearly loved. His wife of many years, Susan Miller Weinstein and son Alex Weinstein, along with family – nephew, niece and cousins, friends in this area and out of state, will always remember his kindness and loyalty. He will be missed terribly by those whom he loved and loved him.
