Obituary for Beverly Boogich Schummer (Carder)

Beverly June Carder Boogich Schummer, 80, of San Diego, CA, passed away on the afternoon of Saturday January 2, 2021, at The Kline Hospice House of Frederick County, MD. She was born in Bridgeport, WV on January 23, 1940, the daughter of the late William Russell Carder and Mabel Lee (Hill) Carder.

She is survived by her two daughters, Cassandra Kidwell of La Jolla CA, and Jennifer Oku of San Diego CA. In addition, there are three surviving step-children, Melinda Boogich Patnoi, Jack Boogich and Joyce Boogich Carrion.

She had one granddaughter, Maranda Lee Henderson and her husband Brandon Henderson; two great-grandsons, Caleb James Henderson and Austin Joseph Henderson, all of Maryland. Her younger brother, Daniel Carder and his wife Sara of Bridgeport; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Carder of Shepherdstown, WV; and several nieces and nephews complete her family.

Beverly was preceded in death by two husbands, Joseph L. Boogich (1928-1971); and Bernard K. Schummer (1934-2016); as well as her step-daughter Ellen Boogich Cohen.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her older brother Jack Otis Carder and his wife Roma, older sister Sandra Jean Policano and her husband Larry Policano, and two younger brothers, William Carder and John David Carder.

At the tender age of 3, Beverly began singing at a small hometown church where her father preached. She went on to study singing and dancing throughout her school years, and once starting high school, her talent and passion for the arts kept her busy. Somehow, she found the time and energy not only to graduate with honors but to also work full time at Andersons Restaurant in Clarksburg, lead the High School Majorette Team and rein as Homecoming Queen. In 1958 she was awarded the prestigious title of First Runner Up for Miss West Virginia.

After graduating from Bridgeport High in 1958 she took off for the bright lights of New York City. She set out to light the world up and had the firepower to do it!! Once she hit the big city she began singing in some of the hottest clubs in NY. She was quick to draw attention to her talents and so the story goes her professional singing career was off with a blast! She had the honor of headlining with some of the greats, Ray Charles, Bobby Vinton, Little Anthony, Frankie Valle, Rodney Dangerfield & Buddy Hackett to name a few. While the talent scouts and record producers were taking notice so was the man that ultimately became the love of her life, her first husband, Joey B. They had a whirlwind romance and were married just months after he laid eyes on the beautiful barefoot songbird from WV. When her first child was born she put her singing career on the back burner. Their marriage brought two children and 13 years of great happiness. When her husband unexpectedly passed away, she was on the road again. As a widow at 30 years old with two young children to support, this tragedy led her journey to Silver Springs, Maryland and the next new chapter of her life.

She began working with the Department of Defense as an Administrative Secretary with a GS2 civilian government rating. During her service to the Department of Defense her supervisors quickly realized she had an uncanny knack for Contract Negotiations and Administration. Through her tenure with the DOD she continually won copious monetary awards and certificates and she steadily rose up the chain. During this time, she earned her Bachelor’s Degree relevant to contract law and administration. Several years before officially retiring she took to the road once again with a new promotion in hand. She was ready for her next adventure and headed off to San Diego, California with family in tow. She married once again and spent the next 20 years with her second husband Bernie, a kind man who was her friend, companion and confidant until he passed away in 2016. She ended her career 25 years after starting with the government holding one of the highest ranks a civilian could achieve, a GS15 rating. After retiring she was compelled by a notable California Senator to work as a consultant for a struggling minority business. She gladly accepted this challenge and continued working for the next two years.

Beverly’s final promotion led her to the greatest journey of all times into the warm and loving arms of family and friends that had passed before her and, “Our Heavenly Father” that she worshipped and loved so dearly!
