Obituary for Edward Lloyd Cox Sr.

Edward Lloyd Cox, Sr., age 74, beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, peacefully passed into Eternity on Saturday afternoon, June 12, 2021, at his residence, due to complications of an ischemic stroke suffered in August, 2014. He was born in Stonewood on May 8, 1947, the son of Betty Jean (Morgan) Cox, who survives in Clarksburg, and the late Glenn Marshall Cox, Sr.

He is survived by his wife, Shelley L. (Bunch) Cox, who became his devoted caregiver and advocate, never wavering in her constant attention to his needs.

Edward graduated from Victory High School in 1965. He retired from Jerry Run Division A. F. G. Industries with 33 years of service. Prior to his illness he was employed by Lowe’s of Clarksburg. A staunch conservative, Ed was a patriot who proudly served nine years in the 119th Engineer Company WV Army National Guard, Camp Dawson, Kingwood, WV. He had also worked as a heavy equipment operator for area mining companies. Brought up in The Church of God, Eddie was a Christian.

Eddie loved people, and with his charming personality he never met a stranger. He was quick of wit, always with an exceedingly corny joke to share. His many talents included sketch artist, and he could oft be found seated at his piano playing favorite tunes.

He became an expert marksman with exceptional knowledge of firearms and enjoyed reloading ammo. He loved the outdoors, and together he and his brother Glenn explored the valleys and mountains of WV. His Uncle Edward Mayle was also a favorite rabbit and squirrel hunting partner.

Survivors who cherish Edward’s memory include his mother and wife, children Edward L. Cox, Jr. (Janie); Phillip D. Cox (Cindy); Heidi E. Cox, and step-daughter Kelly Jo Cody; his grandchildren Elizabeth Nicole Cox Elliott, Morgan Virginia, Jerry Marshall, Courtney Elizabeth, and Kimberly Rosalee Cox, Draven Xavier and Arabella Josephine Cruz, twins Ada Elizabeth and Madison Laurestine Workman, and Willow Grace Knotts; five great-grandchildren; his brother Glenn M. Cox, Jr and his wife Savannah (Sue); and his sister, Cynthia Cox Cleland, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and countless cousins.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a great-grandson infant Warren Elliott; step-daughter Kimberly Jo Cody, grandparents Lloyd Waitman and Icy Belle Mayfield Morgan, and William Calvin and Faye Johnson Cox. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Edward shared his personal feelings about his full and blessed life…
”I thank God for the world’s best mother and father, and the priceless gift of a Church of God upbringing; for my family including two fine sons, and my darling daughter who loved collecting and painting tortoise shells which currently occupy a box in my home; my brother and nephews Michael and Brian Cox with whom I enjoyed fishing, hunting, and reloading; and for my lifelong friend Mark Gaskins, Skip Hays, and Denver Winters. Finally, no man could have been more blessed than I to have known the unconditional love of our God and a wife who dedicated herself to me.

The family would like to thank Dr. Mike Angotti, Dr. Paul Davis, Mike Martin and Jack Spadafore for therapy; and the Hospice nurses and aides.

The family will receive friends and family at the Burnside Funeral Home, 607 South Virginia Ave., Bridgeport, on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, from 2 – 8 pm, where services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16, 2021, with Pastor David Masto presiding. Committal services will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Limestone Road, Clarksburg, WV.
