Obituary for Rita N. Hammond (Fore)

Rita N. Hammond, 86, of Bridgeport passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, July 5, 2021. She was born on January 14, 1935 in Reedy, WV to the late Harry and Nellie Fore.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, William C. “Bill” Hammond, who she married on May 23, 1952. She was also preceded in death by one grandson, Daniel Hammond, as well as her two sisters, Jean Hereford and Ruth Simons.

She is survived by two sons, Charles C. Hammond of Bridgeport and Robert “Bob” Hammond and his wife Susan of Loris, SC; three grandchildren, Ann Hammond and her husband Henry Williams, Jessie Kimball and her husband Josh, and Thomas Aichele; and five great grandchildren, Madison, Mackenzie, Elijah, ZaKya, and Madison.

Rita graduated a year early from Spencer High School as valedictorian in 1952 in order to marry Bill, and move to Washington D.C. to work for the FBI. Eventually, they moved back to West Virginia to start their family. Rita was a dedicated employee of Harrison County Schools, serving as the secretary of Chestnut Hills and Norwood Elementary until her retirement. Rita and Bill were active members in AARP and The West Virginia Retired School Employees where they lobbied to pass bills that would benefit seniors in need. She was also an active member of United Methodist Temple and United Methodist Women for over 65 years. She was known for organizing countless community events, such as the Soup Sale and Rummage Sale. She will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, family and friends.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Sunday, July 11, 2021, from 2 – 6 p.m., where services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 12, 2021, with Reverend Michael Burge presiding. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
