Obituary for Lawrence Metzner

Lawrence Metzner, 95, of Stonewood, passed away Wednesday February 23, 2022 at his residence. He was born July 29, 1926 in Helvetia a son of the late Arnold and Della Vogel Metzner.

Lawrence married B. Louise (Crites) Metzner on October 24, 1948, and she preceded him in death on July 3, 2010.

He is survived by a son Larry Metzner and his wife Eleanor Terrell of Georgetown, DE; a daughter Ladonna Tucker of Clarksburg; and a daughter-in-law Pastor Susan Metzner of Hambleton. He is also survived by grandchildren Christopher Metzner and his companion Michelle Victor of Jacksonville, FL, Craig Metzner and his wife Amy of Seaford, DE, Timothy Metzner and his wife Heather of Milford, DE, Loren Metzner and his wife Erica of Morgantown, Jeremy Weaver and his wife Carrie of Lumberport, Jamie Weaver and his companion Tracy of Dawson Mines, Michalla Metzner of Parsons, and a step-grandson Yancey Weaver and his wife Kim of Lost Creek; 9 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren. A brother-in-law, Stacy Crites and his wife Tib of Saltwell Road; a sister-in-law Cletha Sutton of Canton, OH; and several nieces and nephews complete his family.

Lawrence was also preceded in death by his son Pastor Loren Metzner, and his son-in-law Gary Tucker. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by his siblings, Arlene Zickefoose, Louise Skinner, Ozella Smith and Howard Metzner.

He was a graduate of Pickens High School and served in the United States Navy for four years during World War II. He worked as a welder for Jim Compton, retiring at the age of 58. He also worked for J. Dyer Construction and Union Carbide. Lawrence was a long-time member of Stonewall United Methodist Church where he was active in the choir, served as Sunday School Superintendent, and Trustee.

Lawrence was very proud of his Swiss roots and was a curator for the museum at Helvetia, loved to rabbit hunt, fish and always had a prized garden. He has a love dove “Hope” whom he cherished.

Friends and family will be received from noon to 2 pm Sunday February 27, 2022 at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport, where services will be held with Pastor Susan Metzner presiding. A committal service will be held on Monday, February 28, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
