Obituary for Daniel L. Fisher

Daniel L. Fisher passed away from this life suddenly on Saturday, March 12, 2022, at his home with his wife of 48 years, Cathy. Dan was born on September 26, 1949. He was the son of the late Ada Johnson Marsh and the late Melvin Fisher. Dan is survived by his brothers Jack Fisher, David Fisher and his wife Vanessa, his sister Mary Jo Snider, and his aunt Nancy Johnson Richison. A sister, Connie Perry, preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, William and Florence (Roberti) Burnett. Surviving him also are his brothers and sisters-in law, Joan and Virgil Smith, Rosalyn Queen, Bill and Danitzca Burnett.
“Uncle Dan” had several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great, great nieces and nephews. He loved and cherished them dearly. Nothing made him any happier than visiting them, talking with them, taking them to Tygart Lake, going to their games, swim meets, recitals or having sleepovers. He especially loved to fix their broken toys, and put together new projects for them. Time spent with them was time “well spent” he always said. He loved them all so dearly, and set a good “example” for them of how to lead a good and honorable life.
Dan was a 1969 graduate of Roosevelt-Wilson High School. He enlisted into the United States Army in 1969, and served his country proudly in the Vietnam War. He had earned his “jump wings” and several marksmanship awards. Dan was the owner/operator of Dan’s Salvage and Repair in Sardis/Marshville and Engine Rebuilders in Nutter Fort. He enjoyed his work, and earned his living because he was not only an excellent mechanic, but most importantly because he treated all of his customers with kindness, respect and fairness. He was in business for more than 40 years, and had no need to advertise because his customers always spoke highly of him and his work. Their “good words” were all that was needed. Dan had a cherished friend, Jack Fornash, who worked by his side daily.
Dan had many close friends that he enjoyed helping in any way possible. All of his friends could count on him and his helping hands at any time. He was only a phone call away, and he was never too busy for a friend.
Dan started a Birthday Program for the Veterans at the Clarksburg VA Nursing Home. He noticed one day that the vets only had one birthday party each month for all of the veterans whose birthdays fell in that month. Dan did not feel that it was enough. He said “they each deserved their own day.” That became his goal. He got permission for his project from the VA officials, and the monetary support from his business friends. He gave each individual vet a “Birthday Bag” that contained many items, including a hat and mug imprinted with their service emblems, as well as flowers for the female veterans. He presented these gifts to each veteran, personally, on their special day. Then, doing what Dan loved the most, he sat, talked, and listened with each person. Dan kept this project going for about five years prior to the Covid-19 restrictions. He had recently begun preparations to restart his project.
Dan was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Clarksburg where he served as an usher throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. He was also an active member of the RCIA program providing snacks for each new group. He dearly loved Father Casey and Sisters Berita and Maria. It was his privilege to try to always be available to fix things around the church or at the sisters’ home.
As per Dan’s request, there will be no visitation or flower donations. Please make a memorial contribution to the Clarksburg VA Nursing Home in Dan’s memory.
