Obituary for Joseph Paul "JP" Second Sr.

Joseph “JP” Second of Clarksburg, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, June 9, 2022, following an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Catherine, and Veto. A lifelong resident of Harrison County, he graduated from Victory High School and received a BS in Journalism from West Virginia University. An aviator by profession, he was a veteran of both the Air Force and the Coast Guard, as a C-130 Captain. He later worked locally at the Benedum Airport for Aeromech and Wright Airlines. For the final 30 years of his career, he worked as a professional airline Captain for Continental and United airlines.
He is survived by his wife of over 48 years, Judy. They met while he was stationed at Moody Air Force Base near Valdosta, GA. He is also survived by their four children, their spouses, and grandchildren: Joe and Jill Second, of Clarksburg, WV; Jeff and Kerrie Second, their children Chris and Josie, of Fort Knox, KY; Brian Second and Jennifer Brennan, their children Gavin and Brennan, of Eastvale, CA; Melissa and Jason Turner, their children Avery Tomes, Morgan Turner, and Grant Turner, of Clarksburg, WV.
Those who knew him remember him as a great storyteller. He was a voracious reader, possessing a wealth of knowledge on almost any topic, as anyone who watched Jeopardy with him knows. He loved gathering with family around the table, sharing food and wine and laughter. A life member of both the NRA and the North American Hunting Club, and a member of Trout Unlimited. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and target shooting. He was an avid football fan and loved to watch the Mountaineers and Steelers play. A consummate conversationalist, he loved to talk to people and never met a stranger or missed an opportunity to share an anecdote. He accomplished his childhood dream of becoming a pilot, retiring after 40 years in the air, logging tens of thousands of hours of flight time and countless miles. He loved to fly, now he has his wings.
In lieu of flowers, his family is requesting donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, to support their mission of ending the diabetes epidemic. www.diabetes.org
