Obituary for Richard H. Hersman

Richard H. Hersman, 73, of Clarksburg, passed away Tuesday afternoon, July 12, 2022, in the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center. He was born in Elizabeth, WV, on May 29, 1949, a son of the late Donald A. and Elfriede L. (Reichard) Hersman.

He is survived by two daughters, Chrystie Saab and her husband Jaycen of Mt. Clare; and Kelli Weisenberger and her husband Jason of Clarksburg; six grandchildren, Payton Weisenberger; Reagan Saab; Baylee Weisenberger; Elijah Saab; Jayden Weisenberger; and Madilyn Saab. Three sisters, Jane Nevel and her husband Dennis, Burnham, PA; LuAnne Bush and her husband Jim, Sumter, SC; and Connie Hersman and her companion Clayton Flewelling of Sumter, SC; a sister-in-law, Terry Hersman of California; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins complete his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James Hersman and Henry Hersman.

Richard was a graduate of Salem High School. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War, including two tours in Vietnam.

He worked in the oil and gas industry and was a construction foreman. He loved his Harley Davidson motorcycle, enjoyed making model cars, boats, and ships, and jigsaw puzzles. He also had a love of history, learning through both reading and TV programs. He was a member of the VFW, Elks Club and NRA. He took care of his Mother for many years so that she could stay in her home. He loved his family and enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren.

The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care the staff of the West Virginia Veterans Nursing Facility provided to Richard over the last three years.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Saturday, July 16, 2022, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., where services will be held at 1 p.m. with Reverend David Hersman presiding. Interment will be held at a later date at West Virginia National Cemetery.
