Obituary for Dr. Henry M. Berardi

Dr. Henry M. Berardi, 93, of Bridgeport passed away on Friday, August 15, 2014, at the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Hospital. He was born May 20, 1921, in Wheeling, a son of the late Antonio Berardi and Giovanna Paolucci.

He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Virginia Lloyd Berardi, whom he married on February 10, 1944.

He is also survived by his son, Jerry Anthony Berardi and his wife Betty of Bridgeport; his daughter, Lori Berardi Gemondo of Bridgeport; four grandchildren, Brent Anthony Berardi of Bridgeport, Dawn Elizabeth Berardi of Morgantown, Christopher Michael Gemondo of Pittsburgh, PA and Elleyse Nicole Gemondo of Bridgeport; two great-grandchildren, Lindsey Marie Berardi and Ian Anthony Berardi, both of Bridgeport; and a brother Flaviano “Flanick” Berardi of Pittsburgh, PA.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by four brothers, Frederico Berardi, Stefano Berardi, Romolo Berardi and Edwardo Berardi; and four sisters, Adeline Sferra, Philomena Berardi, Lucia Canestraro and Elvera DeCola.

Dr. Berardi was a graduate of Union High School in Benwood, WV, a graduate of Palmer Chiropractic College (Davenport, Iowa), in 1947, and the Illinois College of Optometry (Chicago, Illinois) in 1950. He later attended the Sorbonne Medical School, University of Paris, France. Dr. Berardi had served in the United States Army from 1939 through 1969, serving both in World War II and the Korean War, and retiring as a Colonel. During his time in Korea, he was awarded the Military Order of Merit by Syngman Rhee, the first president of South Korea.

After his retirement from the military in 1969, he worked as an optometrist at the Fairmont Clinic before opening his private practice serving the Clarksburg and Bridgeport area. He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and an active member of the Elks. Some of his favorite things to do were playing Bridge and listening to Big Band music. He enjoyed fishing the waters of north central West Virginia. He also loved spending time with his family, dancing and taking long drives. He was an avid fan of the Mountaineers, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and all of the Pittsburgh professional sports teams.

Family and friends will be received at All Saints Catholic Church, 317 East Main Street, Bridgeport on Monday, August 18, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm, and the Vigil Service will be held on Monday at 6:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 am with Father Hilarion V. Cann as Celebrant. Entombment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery with full Military Funeral Honors.
