Obituary for Robert D. Martin

Robert D. Martin, 82, of Bridgeport, passed away Monday, January 5, 2015, in the United Hospital Center. He was born November 14, 1932 in Ohio, a son of the late Dennis D. Martin and Blanche Bice Martin.
He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Ellen Moats Martin who passed away on October 11, 2005
He is survived by his three children, John Dale Martin and his wife Debra, James L. Martin and Barbara E. Pethtel and her husband Jeff, all of Meadowbrook Road; three grandchildren, Marsha Nicole Martin of Pittsburgh, PA, Montana Brooke Martin of Meadowbrook Road and Serena Clark of Bridgeport; two brothers Lewis Paul Martin of Meadowbrook Road and Donald Martin of Salem, OH; along with several nieces and nephews, and his dog and best friend, Smokey.
He was preceded in death by one son, Virgil Andrew Martin and three sisters, Jo Claire Hickman, Ann Rollins and Patty Collins; and one brother Gary Allen Martin.
Mr. Martin was a truck driver for over 50 years and never really retired. He was a member of Smith Chapel United Methodist Church as well as the Congregational Missionary Church in Stonewood. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and animals. He was always generous with his time and often his money and always willing to help someone in need.
Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Thursday, January 8, 2015 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 1:00 pm with Pastor Sherman Goodwin presiding. Interment will be in Bridgeport Cemetery, Bridgeport.
