Obituary for Kevin "Matt" Matthew Southern

Kevin Matthew “Matt” Southern, 34, of Bridgeport, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 12, 2016, at his residence. He was born in Clarksburg on April 22, 1982 a son of Penny Southern, who survives in Quiet Dell, and the late Richard Kevin “Rick” Southern, who passed away on October 30, 2013.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Misti Southern and her companion Matt of Rolesville, NC; paternal grandmother, Isabelle Southern, Bridgeport; Aunt Lorenna “Rennie” Freeland and Elaine Satterfield and her husband Roy of Bridgeport, Dorothy Crayton and her daughter Donna Francine; uncle Edward Southern of Enterprise, Jimmy Southern and his wife Melissa of Tucker County, Joseph Nutter of Gypsy; cousins, Niketta Wilmoth, Nick and Zack Southern, Rachel Southern, Emily Swiger; several second cousins, Annalee, Aubree, Kyler and Gabriel.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Hank Southern; and maternal grandparents, Frances Nutter and Fred H. Nutter; his Aunt Debbie Southern; and one “brother” Troy Drusky.
Matt worked as a Telemarketer and also the Exxon Gas station in Quiet Dell. Most recently he worked at the Mission in Clarksburg, which was his favorite place to work. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, spending time with his father working on a racecar they sponsored together. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and 4 wheelers, computers and gaming and listening to music. He had a big heart and was very giving to those in need. Most recently he donated his medical equipment to those in need from the flood in the southern part of the state. Teen Challenge is where he found God and was baptized and became a witness for Christ and was an encouragement to many people. He believed in God’s grace and second chances, never passing judgement on anyone.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Appalachian Teen Challenge, 1651 Unity Road, Princeton WV 24739.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Sunday, July 17, 2016, from 3-5pm, where a celebration of Matt’s life will be held at 5:00 p.m. with Pastor Peggy Williams presiding. Burnside Funeral Home, Bridgeport
