The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Dr. William "Bill" Pringle can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

Joseph J. Renn III, MD
Bill and I began Shepherd College as freshmen in the fall of 1956. We were in many classes together as we were both in the prepfofessional track for those aspiring to be physicians and dentists. Bill told the story many times of our first exam in Biology under Professor Harris. He passed out our graded test papers in class and then announced to the whole class who got the highest grades. He announced my name and also Bill's as having received A's. I sat up front and Bill swears I rose up to see who in the back was my "competition." We became friends thereafter. During my third year I was working in the evenings some 6-8 hours and trying to study after that. It didnt' work and, in Organic Chemistry, I had a C- at midterm. I needed As on all remaining exams and at least a B in the final. I quit my job and concentrated on studying. My anxiety on exam days was so high that I couldn't eat, and would have nausea and vomitting. Bill knew this and so he would meet me when I pulled in to park my car (I commuted from home outside of Martinsburg, WV). He stayed with me the entire day until test time, talking with me, calming me, and assuring me that I would do well. And indeed I did, as evidenced by the fact that I have been a medical doctor for 55 years. When it came time to interview for medical school at WVU, Bill had preceded me into WVU Dental School. He had me stay with him the night before in his trailer. He told me to come to the laboratory to get him after my interview. I was told by the head of the interview committee that day that I was accepted for the fall term ( very unlike today). I hurried up to the lab where Bill was studying. He gathered two friends and we went to a bar with pool tables in Star City, WV. We drank a lot of beer in celebration and then I got on the road back to Martinsburg (no DUIs back then). Somewhow I took a wrong turn and ended up in Uniontown, PA before I sobered enough to realize my error and follow Rt. 40 to get home. Later, I mailed Bill a check for putting me up and all his troubles for me. He sent it back with scurrilous remarks written all over it, i.e. "rubber", "who is this?", "debtor", etc. I have always cherished my time with Bill and thank the God who brought us together.
