Obituary for Ruth Elizabeth Clevenger (Brown)

Ruth Elizabeth Clevenger, 86, of Brushy Fork Community, passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Saturday evening, February 28, 2015. She was born on April 25, 1928 in Hialeah, FL a daughter of the late Mark V. Brown and Marie Kail Brown.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Charles Clevenger.
In addition to her husband she is also survived by her son, William L. Clevenger and his wife Candace of Decatur, IL and their children, Scott Clevenger and his wife Lindy of Tuscola, IL, Jonathan Clevenger of Fort Bragg, NC, Stephen Clevenger of Decatur, IL and Michael Clevenger of Decatur, IL; and their daughter, Mary Marie Tucker and her husband Douglas of Grafton and their children, Melissa LePlatt and her husband Eric of Harpers Ferry and Shawn Tucker and his wife Adrienne of Buckhannon; and eight great grandchildren, Andrew, Patton, Sheridan and Asher LePlatt, Madelyn, Brooks and Molly Tucker and Charley Ann Clevenger; two brothers, David Brown and George S. Brown, Sr. and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Alice Alexander and one brother Paul Brown.
Mrs. Clevenger was a 1946 graduate of Bridgeport High School and also received her B.S. degree from West Virginia University in 1950. She retired from teaching Physical Education at Bridgeport Junior High School, having previously taught at Victory High and Washington Irving High Schools. Ruth, along with Martha Devericks and JoAnn Jones, was responsible for the formation of the interscholastic sports programs for girls in Harrison County. She was also an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church having served as lay leader and as a member of the Wesleyan District Board of Ordained Ministry.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, C/O Judy Osborn, 2665 Coplin Run Road Bridgeport WV 26330, along with People’s Hospice, 327 Medical Center Drive Bridgeport WV 2633. The family would like to extend a special thank you to People’s Hospice for their excellent care.
Family and friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 from 2-8 pm. Funeral Services will be conducted on Wednesday at 11:00 am with Reverend Bob Cole presiding. Interment will be in Trinity Cemetery, Brushy Fork
