The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Ruth Clevenger can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

Our Bear!

How we loved our BEAR!!  In case anyone is wondering how she got her nickname - when she began teaching at Victory High, she was Miss Brown - but because of her lovable nature, her students affectionately called her "Brown BEAR". When she married, it was shortened to Bear.  However, she was more like a Teddy Bear - so sweet and funny.  But at the same time, in phys-ed class, we girls knew just how far we could push the envelope when clowning around - we knew when to call her "Mrs. Clevenger"!  She let us know when it was time to get down to business.   Her age WAS the most surprising part to me - why, she wasn't much older than WE were!  But when we were in high school, anyone in their late twenties was old! Bear was not only our phys-ed teacher, but our cheerleading advisor at VHS.  From 1957-1960, I had the privilege of  her instruction.  She was strict - she had very high standards, but we knew her goal was to make us the best team we possibly could be, so her constructive criticism was well received and most welcome.

What a wonderful legacy she left to all Harrison County girls by establishing an interscholastic sports program -  long overdue!   Way to go, Bear!!!   There will never be another like YOU!

My deepest sympathy to all the family.
